about

"The Coronavirus / COVID-19 pandemic has not affected us all equally. Migrant, poor, and racialized communities have been excluded from many response measures while being the worst affected by the economic downturn. We must demand collective responses that leave no one behind, including migrant workers, undocumented people, low-waged students, poor people, and refugees. Pandemics know no borders, neither should our solidarity. Groups from across the country call on federal, provincial and municipal leaders to ensure worker & migrant justice is central to the COVID-19 response and recovery." - migrantrights.ca/covid19/

We played a bizarre show at the airport once and were warned several times not to make too much noise. We ended up reworking a couple songs so that they'd be relatively innocuous for people just trying to down smash burgers in between flights. At some point while Rob was recording drums for Squiggly Lines at Dining Room, he ended up with some extra hours in the studio so we thought we might cut a couple airport tracks for a 7" we ended up selling at shows. Henry, You Can Do What You Like was our attempt at pop music and we just never felt entirely comfortable with it. We reworked it so that it was a more familiar country song; this version is lots of fun to play live. The August Song is going to be on the new album, where it's a kind of bar country type song. In this arrangement it's more of a sitting-on-the-porch country type song. These two tracks are very loose and scrappy and kinda shitty and kinda charming in their own ways, I think. These were both recorded by Dan McLay at Dining Room Studios (you can hear him call "rolling!" on The August Song), and mixed and mastered by Rob at Sun Bear.

This Whiskey Girl cover was done in 2018 and there's a video for it on the famed video website "YouTube" directed by Eli Spiegel. Alex bowed Dan's upright bass and Lucas made some beautiful strange banjo sounds. Rob sings harmony too. My only regret is I think I played it a little fast. The Pool of Blood demo was recorded at Rob's just a couple weeks after the song was written and first performed at a solo show on Dupont, sometime January 2019. There's a lot of rough edges to it and it's clear the song was still finding its shape, but I like the quality of the recording and it's fun to share something that's a work in progress. These were both recorded, mixed, and mastered by Rob at Sun Bear.

Finally, I guess I should mention that the finished recording of The Pool of Blood (the first track here) is one of my favorite things we've ever done as a band, and we owe a huge thanks to Paul for the care he put into recording and mixing it. Devin Shears turned it into a music video that I'm also very proud of and thankful for.
